According to Carol Dweck, author and Stanford University psychologist, most of us fall into one of two Mindset categories. We either have a Fixed Mindset or a Growth Mindset. And why should we care? Because people in one group have significantly greater success in life and business!
People with a Fixed Mindset believe that intelligence is fixed, that we are born with our smarts and that determines our level of achievement. We are either good at something or we are not, and if we are not then it’s time to move on to something that comes easy.
People with a Growth Mindset believe achievement is a matter of effort. That working at something brings us to greater results over time because we are learning and stretching and growing in an area we previously did not excel. Intelligence is a starting point but not the key ingredient to success.
And the Winner is...
You have probably already guessed that most people who achieve greatness have a Growth Mindset. How many times did Thomas Edison attempt to create the lightbulb and fail before his final success? How many times did Abraham Lincoln run for office and lose before becoming elected President?
How To Change A Fixed Mindset…
If you are currently operating with a Fixed Mindset, you can change your belief system and start living the Growth Mindset right now! Begin by telling yourself that bringing your best effort forward is what counts, that assuming poor results is not a reason to stop before you start, and remember that growth and learning are a process. Repeat to self daily as needed.
