Our thoughts precede and determine our feelings. How we are feeling will determine if we act or do not act in any given situation. Whether we choose the path of action or that of inaction determines our relationships, career, finances…everything in our outer world. So while “change your mind, change your world,” may seem silly or ridiculous, if you break it down into the three steps above, it is absolutely true.
ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING!
If you want to change your outer situation, start with your attitude.
Think about a challenge you are having now that you need to resolve (it must be something that is important to you and you believe that you need to work through or get it done). Listen to the self-talk around that challenge. Ask yourself: How do you see the situation? What do you believe about yourself and your abilities related to the situation? Are you focused on desired outcome and solutions or on past failure and everything that is wrong now?
Answer these question: Why is overcoming this challenge important to me? What will it feel like when this is resolved/completed? How will things in my world be different when I am done?
Now reframe your self-talk to motivate positive action to resolve the situation.
Susan makes calls to potential customers who have asked for more information on her product. She also makes follow-up calls to check on customer satisfaction. When she thinks about making these calls her energy level drops to an all time low, she dreads the thought of it and so she busies herself with other tasks and her business is suffering. Her self-talk includes, “I’m not a sales person,” and “I don’t want to bother people,” and “I’m not an expert on this product so I’m not the best person to present this to them.”
When I asked Susan about her business and her goals, she has dreams of a passive income stream over time that supports a lifestyle of play and travel with a moderate amount of work. She wants to financially support her family, help people improve their health and she wants to found a non-profit for animal welfare.
While focusing on her goals: travel, family and animal welfare, Susan began to reframe her self-talk. “My product is amazing and helps people be healthier – I need to share this with them. They have asked for more information so I am providing a valuable service with my calls. My knowledge and experience is excellent and I can present the information in a way that is clear and informative. By sharing my passion with others I can create the life I want for myself and my family.”
Negative thoughts lead to negative feelings, which lead to ineffective action or no action. Positive thoughts create positive feelings, and lead to effective action every time!
