5 Steps to Successful Career Transition

Making a successful career transition involves a great deal of mental, emotional and physical energy. The mere thought can be overwhelming. Yet people do it every day. Odds are they know this secret: when the task seems impossible, break it down into manageable steps and take them one at a time.

 

How to Make a Successful Career Change

ONE - Know Thyself

If you are unhappy with your job now, it is because it does not support your strengths and values. Strengths and values are intrinsic and yet we often choose career paths for extrinsic reasons. TWO – Eliminate Your Fears

The thing that we know is always more comfortable than the thing we do not know. Most people require a lot of discomfort or emotional pain before they will make a big change in their lives. THREE – Research Your Options

After discovering your strengths and values, you will be able to create a list of career options. But this is the real world and your strengths and values are not the only things to consider. You may want a certain income to support a love of travel and not every career option on your list will provide that. You may come up with options you know little about and you will need to discover more about them before you come to a decision about what path to pursue.

FOUR - Make a S.M.A.R.T. Plan

Once you decide on a new career path, break it down into manageable steps just like we have here. Where do you want to be in a year, and in order to get there where will you need to be in six months, and in order to get there where will you need to be at the end of each of the next five months? These answers you find may need to be broken down further into daily or weekly tasks.

S.M.A.R.T. stands for specific, measureable, achievable/attainable, results-focused/relevant and time-sensitive. Most of you know what a S.M.A.R.T. goal looks like, but if you don’t you can find out more here: More About SMART Goals.

FIVE - Execute Your Plan

Put the daily or weekly tasks into your calendar and commit to doing each step.
